In Iowa, a mother and father have been accused of putting their newborn daughter in the bathtub immediately after she was born and drowning her.
Brandon Thoma, 31, and Taylor Blaha, 24, submerged the newborn to stop it from crying after the mother used meth to help ease the pain of her home birth. After drowning the infant, Thoma dumped it nearby at a landfill.

Why did they kill their own child?
After hearing about the incident, officers from the Webster County Sheriff’s Office confiscated their phones and discovered that both had been searching for ways to induce a miscarriage.
The duo was charged with first-degree murder after their Wednesday arrest. Thoma is also accused of harming a body physically. The respective bail amounts were $1 million and $1.05 million.
According to an affidavit, on November 22, a representative of the Iowa Department of Human Services called detectives to inform them that Blaha had been taken to the hospital after giving birth to a child at home, which she later disposed of.

Concerned by the reports, she got in touch with the Webster County Sheriff’s Office, and a detective was sent to the hospital. The detective was then told by Blaha that on November 16, she gave birth to a girl in the bathroom of her Fort Dodge home.
According to an affidavit, on November 22, a representative of the Iowa Department of Human Services called detectives to inform them that Blaha had been taken to the hospital after giving birth to a child at home, which she later disposed of.

She added that the couple already had a two-year-old child and that the father’s name was Thoma. Thoma remained in the bedroom as she gave delivery, but as soon as the child was born, he went into the bathroom to help the mother transfer the child from the toilet to the bathtub.
The infant was alive, crying, and moving its arms when she gave birth, the document claims. She asked Thoma for some amphetamine to ease her agony. Blaha said the investigator that her sister would be the one to adopt the child and that she had no intention of keeping the child.
What caused the incident to occur?
On December 7, Thoma said in a statement that he was afraid that if police found the baby, they would detect meth in its system and take away his second child, a two-year-old boy. The couple decided to drown the infant because their neighbors would get suspicious as a result of the baby’s cries.
The affidavit claims that Thoma showed Blaha how to accomplish this by drowning the infant in a bathtub that was only halfway filled. The baby’s body was removed from the bathtub and placed in trash bags before being placed in a knapsack that Thoma used to carry her outside of the flat.
Blaha told the police that Thoma took the backpack the night before and came back to see it empty. Thomas eventually revealed to authorities where the body had been discovered on December 5, in a remote area to the north of the North Central Iowa Regional landfill. Video surveillance captured Thoma leaving the apartment with the backpack and coming back with one that was “clearly empty.”
Authorities found that both Thoma and Blaha had been looking for information on how to cause a miscarriage after seizing their phones. Thoma also described how he used a pair of scissors they had in their apartment to cut the baby’s umbilical chord and stored pieces of it as a memento of the child. Police later found either the placenta or the umbilical cord.
