Scarlett Johansson is thinking back on how her career changed so she wouldn’t be labeled as “a bombshell-type of actor.”

After filming the 2003 films Lost in Translation and Girl with a Pearl Earring in her teenage years, Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson, 38, said to Table for Two podcast host Bruce Bozzi that she felt like she had arrived in a “strange fever dream.”

Johansson stated on the show that “that sort of marked my transition into my adult profession” and added that she had “a really hard time doing Lost in Translation.”

The actress continued, “I sort of turned into an ingénue, and I just think it’s part of — young girls like that are incredibly objectified, and that’s just a truth. I watched Girl With the Pearl Earring and Lost in Translation at that time, when I was 18 or 19 years old, beginning to learn what it meant to be a woman and discovering my own sexuality.

I truly became stuck, she continued, “I guess it was because of that trajectory I had been sort of thrown into.”

In terms of her early career, Johansson said, “I was kind of being groomed to be this what you call a bombshell-type of actor.” The actress claimed that she felt “cornered in this location like I couldn’t get out of it” while “playing the other lady and the object of desire.”

Bozzi’s spouse and partner at the Creative Artists Agency, Bryan Lourd, was mentioned by Johannson during the interview as a person who assisted her in reviving her own career.

Changing the direction of her career alongside Lourd would be “simple to sit across from someone in that scenario and go, ‘This is working, why alter it?'” the actress remarked. However, a bombshell of such nature “burns bright and rapid, and then it’s done, and there’s no chance beyond that,”

Despite claiming that sex was “never a significant part of my genuine identity,” Johansson said in October that she was “hypersexualized” as a young actress during an interview on actor Dax Shepard’s podcast Armchair Expert.

Because everyone assumed I was older and had been acting for a while, she continued, “I suppose I became kind of pigeonholed into this odd hypersexualized thing.”

“That’s the kind of career you have, it was said. These are the roles you’ve taken on, and I thought, “I guess this is it.””
