On a light-rail train platform near Portland, Oregon, a man accused of gnawing off the ear of a 78-year-old man told detectives he believed the victim was a robot trying to kill him, according to authorities. According to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office, Koryn Daniel Kraemer was charged with second-degree assault on Wednesday in Multnomah County District Court.

The Multnomah County District Attorney’s office said in a statement released on Wednesday that the suspect who is accused of punching an elderly man on a Gresham light rail platform on Tuesday told responding police that doing so had “saved his life.”

Koryn Daniel Kraemer, 25, has been charged with second-degree assault in connection with the incident, and the district attorney’s office has requested that Kraemer be held without bond pending his trial.

The Court Appearance of Kraemer
On Wednesday, a deputy stood at Kraemer’s side when he appeared before a Multnomah County judge in a courthouse. He entered an opening statement that was “not guilty.”

The DA’s office statement included a few more details about the allegedly perpetrated incident. It happened after two in the morning on Tuesday at the Cleveland TriMet MAX station off Northeast 8th Street in Gresham.

How does the attacker approach the victim?
Kraemer allegedly approached a 78-year-old man on the station and attacked him, biting his face. Gresham police said that Kraemer exposed the victim’s skull by tearing off the victim’s ear and some of the flesh off his face.

When Gresham police officers and Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office deputies came and apprehended Kraemer, the victim was allegedly still being bit.

I was very frankly in shock, said state representative Ricki Ruiz, who represents a big portion of Gresham. It’s incredibly disconcerting, unsettling, and just terrifying to see this close to where I live.

How did the victim fare?
A caller reported witnessing a lot of blood and an attacker standing over a victim on a light rail platform in Gresham around 2 a.m. on Tuesday, according to a probable cause affidavit.

According to the affidavit, cops physically separated Kraemer from the woman before taking her to the hospital. According to the affidavit, the victim’s right ear was slightly out of place during the attack and his skull was partially exposed. He was listed as being unconscious but otherwise in good health in the document.

Investigators claim that the suspect initially went by the name El Baker and was imprisoned under that name. According to the affidavit, Multnomah County jail personnel later identified the person as Kraemer, who had just moved from Georgia to Portland.

Motive of the suspect: statement
According to the DA’s office statement, Kraemer reportedly spoke with investigators during a second interview. He claimed that he believed the victim was a “robot” trying to kill him “based on how the victim smelled,” the district attorney’s office reported. The DA’s office claimed that the responding law enforcement officers had saved Kraemer’s life by removing him from “the robot.”

“Kraemer further said that he spit out the victim’s meat that he had consumed.” Kraemer told detectives that he had consumed alcohol, marijuana, and fentanyl pills, according to the district attorney’s office.

zero significant criminal history
On an intake release evaluation form completed through the Multnomah County Circuit Court, Kraemer obtained a score of 2, despite the fact that a score of 6 or higher would have required that he be detained. This is mainly because he has no significant criminal background, either in Oregon or Georgia, where he originally hails.

Kraemer declined to self-report any history of drug addiction, which would have affected the result, saying only that he drank alcohol at the time of the test.

Kraemer did acknowledge that in November he had lost his employment and been evicted from a St. Johns residence. The landlord disclosed to Mike Benner of KGW on Wednesday that he had rented Kraemer a room for about a month.

Kraemer claimed that he was courteous and sweet when he wasn’t smoking marijuana or drinking, but recently, he claimed that something had changed. Before they had Kraemer leave, the homeowner said that he started talking to himself and wrecking the house.

Before his behavior altered, Kraemer told the homeowner that he had attended Ohio’s Oberlin College. Kraemer was listed as the goalkeeper for the men’s soccer team in 2015 and 2016 on the school’s athletics website.
