Anton Walkes, who was he?
English professional footballer Anton Charles Walkes (8 February 1997 – 19 January 2023) was a defender and midfielder.
Walkes made his first appearance for a club in the League Cup while playing for Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.
He went on loan to Atlanta United in 2017. His loan was extended in August till the end of the 2017 campaign.
Walkes then played for League One team Portsmouth for the balance of the 2017–18 campaign before becoming a permanent member of Portsmouth in July 2018.
He stayed with Portsmouth for two more seasons, taking home the EFL Trophy in 2019, before going back to Atlanta United in January 2020. He joined Charlotte FC in 2022, and stayed there until his passing in 2023.
Cause of death for an MLS player
A boat tragedy in Florida on Wednesday claimed the life of MLS player Anton Walkes, according to his team. He was 25.
The Charlotte FC player was discovered unconscious following a two-vessel collision close to Miami Marine Stadium, taken to shore by Miami Rescue, and given CPR, according to a statement from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to PEOPLE.
Walkes, who was operating one of the boats when the collision occurred, was brought to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds, according to the statement.
They stated that there is currently no additional information available and that the inquiry is still ongoing.
